The Government of India had invited entries in Feature Films, Non-feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema sections for the 61st National Film Awards.
As many as 40 Tamil films have entered in various categories. In feature films section, awards are given in 30 categories including best direction, best actor, best actress, best feature film, best debut film of a director, best children's film, best animation film, best production design and best playback singer among others.
Films of popular actors including Vikram ("David"), Dhanush ("Maryan"), Vishal ("Pandiya Naadu"), Arya ("Raja Rani"), Sivakarthikeyan ("Ethir Neechal") and Vijay Sethupathi's ("Pannnaiyaarum Padminiyum" and "Soodhu Kavvum") have also made it to the list.
Critically-acclaimed films such as "6 Melugu Vathigal", "Haridas", "Madha Yaani Kootam", "Moodar Koodam", "Thalaimuraigal" and "Thangmeenkal" among others also feature in the list.
