With the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony just hours away and the fact that you’re going to be piss drunk in a little while, consider reading this article about the basics of the FIFA World Cup to bring you up to speed, especially if you’re still not sure about what the hell is going on:
1) The FIFA World Cup is being hosted by the nation of Brazil this time, the matches will take place in 12 different cities in Brazil, in 12 different stadiums, many of which were newly built. This is the 20th FIFA World Cup and the second to be hosted by Brazil, the first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930. Some of the recent hosts of the World Cup have been South Africa, Germany, South Korea and Japan (jointly in 2002), France and USA.
2) Spain is the current defending champion, they won the FIFA World Cup 2012 which was held in South Africa, however the host country Brazil has won the FIFA World Cup 5 times, more than any other country followed by Italy which has won 4, most recently in the FIFA World Cup 2006 which was held in Germany.
3) Three billion people are expected to watch the FIFA World Cup 2014 opening ceremony world wide, at least that’s what they say. If this true it would mean that nearly half the world’s population will be glued to their television sets in a little while, and we bet at least a tenth will be drunk.
4) The FIFA World Cup Will start on the 12th of June (which is today) and end on the 13th of July. The first match of the World Cup will be between Brazil and Croatia. 32 countries (including the host) have qualified and will play a total of 64 matches.
5) The winners of the FIFA World Cup will get not only a shiny trophy and lots of prestige, but also $35 million and the runner-up country will get $25 million in prize money. The total prize money that FIFA has to offer is $576 million.
6) The official song of FIFA World Cup 2014 is We are One (Ole Ola) by Pitbull featuring Jennifer Lopez, which isn’t all that bad but we honestly still prefer Shakira’s Waka Waka.
