FIFA World Cup 2014 Opening Ceremony Live Updates

Jun 12, 2014
Hello and welcome to the live blog of the FIFA World Cup 2014 opening ceremony. FIFA World Cup 2014 ceremony is all set to kickstart the biggest spectacle in sport. The opening ceremony will last for around 25 minutes and will include a display of Brazilian dance, performance from international stars like Pitbull, The Beatles’ Sir Paul McCartney, Jennifer Lopez will be performing.
That’s it, folks! Ciao!
Can it get better this? Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, and Samba!
Pitbull!
Now the ball opens up, to reveal a flower, and, hold on: JENNIFER LOPEZ!
Now the Brazilian flag, being carried by a group…
A fine display of acrobatics from the troupe, now.
The prettiest of referees in human history now takes out a red card and blows a whistle.
They’re changing steps faster than I’m typing. Pardon me. All I can tell you is that it’s a plethora of colours and music out there. The kind of Rio carnivals you get to see in movies!
Between you and me, the men are doing a great job here as well.
They say Brazilian girls are extremely pretty. I do not think I will doubt that. What is more, they are extremely graceful to boot, gliding with the grace of swans across the arena.
Now the Brazilian beauties swamp the ground. Hold on to your seat-belts, guys!
A huge Brazilian musical instrument being played by two extremely jolly-looking men.
These look like giant water-flowers. This humongous ground is heating up, folks. The music us magical as a canoe (with a canoeman and oars) is being carried across the ground.
Kids in green and mauve are now dancing across the field. That looks like the Amazon forest — that unexplored domain of Brazil.
Okay, here we go, guys. A giant sphere at the centre of the ground. A line of people with blue costumes and eerie masks, and a tree-man straight out of Lord of the Rings. I think that’s an ent.
Also go through Arunabha Sengupta’s series on cricket as the sport ran parallel to the football World Cup. Part I is here.
Read about Abhishek Mukherjee’s article on the World Cup qualifier where Steve Bucknor had officiated here. Did you know he became an international referee before an international umpire?
Do you know Croatia has a cricket connection? Read Nishad Pai Vaidya’s article here.
Hold on, don’t go away. The ceremony is yet to begin. Meanwhile, Joe Root has scored a hundred (with excellent support from Matt Prior), and England has recovered from 120/4 to 344/5 at stumps on Day One.
After the opening ceremony, hosts Brazil are all set to take on Croatia in the first match. Brazil are hosting the FIFA World Cup after 64 years.
“The Opening Ceremony is a tribute to Brazil and its treasures: nature, people football. The sense of excitement here is amazing and everyone is very motivated. It doesn’t matter whether they’re feeling tired or hot sometimes or if they have to go through routines again and again: they just keep on smiling. It’s amazing.” show’s Belgian artistic director Daphne Cornez was quoted as saying by the official FIFA website.
