Ever since the very first international football tournament was held, the FIFA World Cup has undergone through successive expansions and has been remodeled to its present day 32-team. The final tournament was preceded by a two-year qualifying process, which involved as many as 200 teams ranging from all parts of the globe.
In 2010 the World Cup was initially held in South Africa- and was the first cup which was held on African soil, with the cup having been won by Spain- which was considered as one of the tournament favorites, Spain won the cup despite scoring only 8 goals in 7 games and facing defeat to their opening match against Switzerland.
Distinguished for its highly defensive opening matches, as well as the controversies surrounding the goal-linetechnology, and the introduction of vuvuzelas- the tournament was considered as having been one of the tournament favorites, in a final which turned out a record number of yellow cards dispensed and the extremely aggressive play bythe Dutch, the 10-man team from the Netherlands were ultimately defeated 1–0 during the 116th minute of extra time by Andres Iniesta’s goal.
Four years later, and the World Cup is set to take place once again – with the tournament set to take place in Brazil ( with Brazil being the primary contender in this case – having won 5 times previously ) now set to play against Croatia. With an estimated 800 million + viewer fan base cheering them on, as both teams will now vie against each other and play to the bitter end in their pursuit for the Gold ( World Cup Trophy ) Medal on the football field with millions cheering them on globally !
During the next 4 weeks, spectators and Soccer fans will be on the edge of their seats and lining the stadiums to watch and cheer on their favorite teams and players – it will be sheer madness as the adrenaline levels will probably over-exceed the goals and scoreboard numbers- but then again, when it all comes down to the nitty-gritty, its not about the numbers, and its not even about winning – but rather, HOW you play the Game.
