Uruguay secured the 20th and final place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup with a 36-27 victory over Russia in the second leg of their repechage at the Charrua stadium. Los Teros, who lost the first leg 22-21 in Krasnoyarsk two weeks ago, won 57-49 on aggregate and take their place in a daunting Pool A with hosts England, Wales, Australia and Fiji at next autumn’s tournament.
It is the third time Uruguay have reached the finals, after 1999 and 2003, having lost in the play-offs for the past two tournaments.
Russia changed ends 17-12 up after scoring the first try just before half-time. They caught Uruguay cold with a quickly taken tap penalty while the hosts were expecting a kick at goal and Aleksandr Ianushkin went over in the corner. Up to that point, the teams had scored four penalties each, from Felipe Berchesi and Yury Kushnarev.
Uruguay hit back hard with three tries inside 10 minutes from Joaquin Prada, Alejo Corral and Agustin Ormaechea, all three close enough to the posts to allow Berchesi the conversions that put them 33-20 ahead.
Russia then had Denis Simplikevich shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle. They scored a second try through Vasily Artemyev three minutes from time but Berchesi stepped up to kick another penalty for Uruguay to seal the tie.
